Lauki is nothing but Bottle Gourd and Chana Dal is Bengal Gram. Both together is cooked with some delectable Indian spices. This wholesome dish is served with Rice or Roti.



Preparation Time:

60-80 mins

Cooking Time:

30 mins


Bottle Gourd peeled and chopped - 1 medium size
  Oil - 2 tbsp
  Cumin Seeds - ½ tsp
  Bengal Gram - ½ Cup
  Ginger grated - 1 tsp
  Salt to taste
  A pinch of Asafoetida
  Red Chillies - 2
  Turmeric Powder - ¼ tsp
  Red Chilli Powder - ½ tsp
  Garam Masala - 1 tsp
  Mango Powder - 1 tsp
  Coriander Leaves/Cilantro chopped for garnishing
  Water - 1 Cup or as needed to reach the desired consistency


• Wash and soak Chana dal for an hour or more.

• Heat Oil in a pan, add Cumin Seeds, Asafoetida and Red Chillies. Stir fry for few seconds.

• Then add Ginger, Turmeric, Chilli Powder and stir fry.

• Add Chana dal, Bottle Gourd, Salt and 1 Cup of Water. Cook until the Vegetable and the Dal is soft.

• Take off from heat and add Mango Powder and Garnish with Cilantro

• Serve hot with Chapatis.
